Buried beneath Maidstone Grammar School for Girls lie World War 2 air-raid tunnels. First-hand accounts tell of lessons learned underground and drawings on the walls illustrate that nothing could prevent the girls from receiving their education, not even air raids or bombs.
We have planning permission to build a visitor centre that will house a replica World War 2 classroom, but due to delays with the construction, this is unlikely to be ready for use until 2026. As a result of the huge demand that we have experienced, we have set up a temporary World War 2 classroom/visitor centre and will be hosting World War 2 experience days from 9:15am until 2:30pm on selected days throughout Summer and Autumn 2024 .
The visits will include a tour of 2 sets of original World War 2 air raid tunnels as well as interactive, classroom based activities, 1940s style games and a quiet space to enjoy a packed lunch. We will transport the children back to 1940 during the morning of their visit to enhance their learning and help them to put themselves in the shoes of the students who were here during World War 2 .
